How does palliative care fit into 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development?

Palliative care is not a ‘hot topic’ and often gets forgotten about by international and national policy makers. However, the need for palliative care is becoming essential as the elderly population and noncommunicable diseases, like cancer, increase. Katherine Pettus, advocacy officer from International Association for Hospice & Palliative Care (IAHPC), demonstrates in a concept note the growing need for palliative care and how publicly provided palliative care under Universal Health Coverage supports progress towards Agenda 2030.

However, until governments support publicly provided palliative care, we need to continue to support nonprofits like Hospice Africa Uganda (HAU). HAU has not only become a model for other palliative care services but it also has become the sole manufacture of oral morphine for the Country of Uganda.
